The short answer: from Madrid-Barajas (MAD) you can reach the city by Metro Line 8, by suburban train from Terminal 4, by the 24-hour Airport Express bus, by taxi at a fixed fare of €33 to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road, or by a pre-booked private car. Public transport is the cheapest. A taxi or private car is quicker door to door, especially with luggage, a group or a meeting to reach.
How the terminals at Madrid-Barajas are organised
Madrid-Barajas has five terminal buildings: T1, T2 and T3, which sit together in one complex, and T4 with its satellite building T4S, which stand apart from the others. Aena, the airport operator, runs connection services between the terminals, but the distance between T1–T3 and T4 is large enough that you should always check which terminal your flight uses before you plan a pickup or a meeting.
- Check your booking or the airline's website for the terminal. Airline terminal allocations can change, so confirm close to the travel date.
- Give the terminal to whoever is collecting you. A driver waiting at T1 cannot meet you at T4 quickly.
- T4S passengers arrive at the satellite but collect their bags and exit through the main T4 building.
What are the ways to get from Madrid airport to the city?
Metro Line 8
Line 8 runs from Airport T4 to Nuevos Ministerios, where you can change to other lines. It is a good choice if you travel light and your hotel is near a Metro station. Expect to change trains for most central addresses, and note that an airport supplement applies to Metro tickets from the airport stations.
Suburban train (Cercanías)
Aena lists two suburban train lines that connect Terminal 4 with the city centre. They are useful for reaching main stations such as Chamartín and Atocha, but they only serve T4, so passengers arriving at T1, T2 or T3 first need to transfer between terminals.
Airport Express bus (line 203)
The Airport Express runs 24 hours a day. During the day it links the terminals with Atocha station, and at night it runs to Plaza de Cibeles instead. Madrid's official tourism site lists a single fare of €5.10, payable on board by card or phone. It is the simplest public option for a late arrival.
Taxi at a fixed fare
Madrid sets a fixed taxi fare of €33 between the airport and any address inside the M-30 ring road, 24 hours a day, with no supplements added. Trips to addresses outside the M-30 use the meter, with a minimum airport fare of €22 for the first 9 km. Official taxi ranks are outside each terminal.
Pre-booked private transfer
A private transfer is booked before you fly. A chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign, helps with luggage and drives you directly to the address. You know the vehicle and the price before you travel.
Which option suits which traveller?
| Option | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 8 | Solo travellers with light luggage | Usually needs a change of line; airport supplement applies |
| Suburban train | Travellers heading to Chamartín or Atocha | Departs from T4 only |
| Airport Express bus | Late arrivals on a budget | 24 hours; daytime to Atocha, night to Cibeles |
| Taxi | Short notice, inside the M-30 | Fixed €33 fare inside the M-30; queue at peak times |
| Private transfer | Executives, families, groups, tight schedules | Pre-booked, met in arrivals, fixed price per vehicle |
Arriving for a meeting: what to plan
For business travellers the cost of the ride matters less than arriving on time and in a fit state to work. A few habits make the difference:
- Leave a buffer after landing. Passport control and baggage reclaim at a large hub can take longer than the flight's final hour suggests, especially for non-Schengen arrivals.
- Share the flight number, not the landing time. A chauffeur who tracks the flight will adjust the pickup if it lands early or late.
- Know your exact destination. Many offices in Madrid sit outside the centre, around the business districts to the north. The fixed taxi fare only applies inside the M-30.
- Plan the return separately. Allow for traffic on the ring roads and for the walk inside T4 if you fly from the satellite.
Booking a car for a visiting executive
If you are arranging the trip for someone else, book the car under the traveller's name, add a mobile number that works in Spain, and tell the provider which terminal the flight uses. Ask for the chauffeur's contact details to be sent before the day. Our checklist for booking a car for a visiting executive covers the full list.
