The short answer: a long-distance chauffeur transfer is a private, door-to-door ride between cities at a price agreed per vehicle before you travel. It is most useful when you have luggage, travel as a group or family, need to work on the way, or are heading somewhere a train or flight does not serve directly. Book with your exact addresses, passengers, luggage and any stops, and for cross-border trips make sure every passenger carries valid entry documents.
When does a car beat the train or a short flight?
- Door to door. No transfers to and from stations or airports at either end.
- Luggage and equipment. Golf bags, skis, samples and strollers go in the vehicle.
- Groups and families. The price is per vehicle, so it covers everyone on board.
- Working time. Calls and laptop work are easier in a private car than in a crowded carriage.
- Destinations off the rail map. Resorts, wineries, small towns and holy sites are often easier to reach by road.
A fast train between two city centres can still be the better choice for a solo traveller with light luggage.
How are long-distance transfers priced?
Most chauffeur services price a city-to-city transfer per vehicle, based on the route and the vehicle class. Ask whether the quote is fixed, whether tolls and parking are included, and how planned stops affect it. A price that does not change with traffic is easier to budget.
Planning rest stops and stops on the way
On longer drives, a professional chauffeur plans rest breaks. If you want to stop for a meal, a meeting or sightseeing on the way, say so when you book so the timing and price account for it.
Choosing the right vehicle
Count passengers and luggage together. A sedan suits up to three passengers with standard cases, an SUV adds space for more luggage, and a Sprinter van seats up to 14. Comfort matters more on a long drive than on an airport run, so if in doubt, choose the next size up. See the fleet page for every class.
Crossing a border by car: Toronto to Buffalo
For land crossings into the United States from Canada, U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists the documents accepted under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative:
- Canadian citizens: a valid passport, an Enhanced Driver's Licence, or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS.
- U.S. citizens: a U.S. passport, passport card, Enhanced Driver's Licence or trusted traveller card.
- Children under 16 who are U.S. or Canadian citizens may present a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship at land crossings.
Travellers of other nationalities need the visa or travel authorization that applies to them. Allow extra time for the border, and make sure your provider is set up to carry passengers across it. Our Pearson Airport to Buffalo transfer page covers that route.
