Cancun Airport Transfer: What to Expect at CUN

Cancun International Airport is about 16 km south of downtown Cancun, off Highway 307. It’s one of the busiest airports in Latin America.

Know your terminal. Cancun has several passenger terminals, each with its own arrivals exit, and they’re too far apart to walk with luggage. As a general guide, most US and Canadian flights use Terminal 3 or Terminal 4, and domestic and Latin American flights use Terminal 2. Airlines sometimes change terminals, so tell us your airline and flight number when you book. Your driver will wait outside the right terminal.

Walk past the “Shark Tank.” After customs, you’ll walk through a hall of people offering taxis, tours and “free” rides. Many are selling timeshares. You don’t need to stop. Your Cancun airport transfer is already booked, so walk straight through the exit doors to the meeting point, where your driver waits with a name board.

Arrival takes time. From landing to the exit doors usually takes 35 to 100 minutes, depending on immigration queues and the season. We track your flight and time your pickup to when you actually come out, with no extra charge for delays.

Check flight information on the official Cancun Airport (ASUR) website before you travel.

Approximate travel times from Cancun International Airport:

CUN to downtown Cancun — around 20 to 25 minutes.

CUN to the Cancun Hotel Zone — around 20 to 35 minutes, depending on your resort.

CUN to Puerto Morelos — around 25 minutes.

CUN to Costa Mujeres — around 30 to 40 minutes.

CUN to Playa del Carmen — about 55 km, around 45 to 60 minutes.

CUN to Puerto Aventuras and Akumal — around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

CUN to Tulum — about 120 to 130 km, around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Allow extra time in peak season, from December to April. Every Cancun airport transfer is quoted as a fixed price per vehicle, not per person, so it often costs less per head than a shared shuttle for families and groups.

Sedan or Van: Choosing Your Vehicle

Sedan. Best for one to three passengers with standard luggage. Ideal for couples and solo travellers going to the Hotel Zone or Playa del Carmen.

Van. Best for families, groups and anyone with a lot of luggage, golf bags or dive gear. Everyone travels together in one vehicle, at one fixed price, and the long drive to Tulum is more comfortable with the extra space.

Tell us your group size and number of suitcases when you book, and we’ll confirm the right vehicle. Child seats are available on request.

Private Transfer vs Shared Shuttle

A shared shuttle waits until it’s full and stops at several hotels on the way, which can turn a 45-minute ride into two hours. A private Cancun airport transfer leaves as soon as you’re out, goes directly to your hotel, and has room for all your luggage. For couples, families and anyone heading to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, private is usually the better choice.

Tulum, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya

Most Riviera Maya resorts are along Highway 307, between Cancun and Tulum. We run fixed-rate private transfers to every resort area, and we’ll stop on request, for example at a supermarket on the way to your villa.

Flying into Tulum? Tulum now has its own international airport (TQO), south of Tulum. If your flight lands there, tell us and we’ll plan your transfer from Tulum airport instead.

Isla Mujeres. We take you to the ferry terminal at Puerto Juárez, from where ferries cross to the island.

Day Trips from Cancun

With hourly hire or a day booking, your driver waits while you explore. Popular trips include Chichén Itzá, the Tulum ruins, the cenotes along the Riviera Maya, Akumal for sea turtles, and the Xcaret and Xel-Há parks. Start early to beat the heat and the tour buses.

Private Aviation Transfers in Cancun

Private flights at Cancun International Airport use the FBO (Fixed Base Operation), which sits apart from the passenger terminals, next to Terminal 1. Passengers clear immigration and customs there. We provide transfers between the FBO and your hotel or villa, timed to your aircraft. Share your tail number and estimated arrival time when you book.

Black Drive is an independent transfer service and is not affiliated with Cancun International Airport or ASUR.
